SCES goes to CapitolTech!
SCES is one of 13 schools in the state to be selected to present at CapitolTech. During our presentation, the student will share three things. The first is a video that tells our story and why we feel technology is important. The students will demonstrate how we use the Promethean board to teach math. Finally, the students will show the SCES CapitolTech blog, which contains links to websites that we use in our classrooms to enhance math instruction.

chemical properties
This was a fun activity about chemical properties without even going to the science lab!

Cyberchase
We have been using Cyberchase as a math center. The students love it. They all want to go to that math center so they can play a game. When they go to the center they go to the blog and click on the link and it takes them straight to the site. They are only allowed to play the game 3 times. Great center activity for 1 student at the time.

Games on the Promethean Board
We have been using the promethean board to play games. We are using a computer program. Instead of the program being used by one student at one computer, the entire class can participate using the promethean board. The students enjoy dividing into teams to compete. They've been so excited about playing the game. They've forgotten they are learning as well as practicing.

Bus Route
I finally got around to going over the Bus Route activity with my kids today. It's funny that they have been asking to go over it when they usually never give an activity another though after we are done. Anyway, I used the flipchart with one class that Jeff posted, and the kids thought it was so cool. After we used the flipchart to review the activity, they were a little upset at themselves because they saw that it was really not that difficult. When I tried to use the Powerpoint presentatiaon with the other class, I found that I could not figure out how to write on the presentation with the use of the Promethean pen. If there is a way to do this, someone please help. I finally copied it into a word document and could then write on it. That was before I saw that Jeff had also included a flipchart. One of my students suggested I copy and paste it! Thanks whoever that was--I don't remember.

interactive thermometer
I found this web site for an interactive thermometer. We used it in math. It helped some of the students to better understand how to read a thermometer. www. standards.dfes.gov.uk/numeracy/publications/itps/themometer/thermometer_flash.swf
You can move the arrows up down the thermometer to show the temperature.
Another activity we did was to use the web site National Llibrary of Virtual Manipulatives. The students worked in groups to do the factor tree and money. After the activity, I had them to write how this activity helped them. One student wrote that it helped his memory chip a lot. Most students said it helped them better understand the concepts. Two or three are still strugglling because they still have not learned their multiplication tables.
The last activity was sequencing. This was a real challenge. About half of the students really got into it and worked very hard. The rest had a hard time with it. Most understood better after the problem was explained.

Explorers Galore!
Before the Christmas Holidays, we completed our research on Explorers and began putting our information into PowerPoint Presentations to be presented to the class. Because we had done this before, it went much more smoothly this time. The students already had an idea of what and how to create the presentations. Some students are even putting music into their slide shows! I can't wait to share these, I think the students will really enjoy and learn from their classmates presentations.
